Description

Corn cob granules are heavier than wood shavings, and that weight is the point — they don't cling to fur and paws, so they stay in the cage instead of being scattered across the floor.

Why it works

  • Doesn't get stuck — the heavier structure means it won't cling to fur and paws
  • Stays in the cage — noticeably less mess around the enclosure
  • Pleasant natural character and fragrance
  • Strict quality control — manufactured to DIN ISO 9001 standards

Features & specification

  • Material: corn cob spindles — a by-product of corn processing
  • Suitable for: rodent and bird enclosures
  • Alternative to conventional softwood shavings and granulates
  • High density means fewer bedding changes

Frequently asked questions

How does this compare to wood shavings?
Corn cob granules are heavier, so they track far less. Softwood shavings can also release aromatic compounds that irritate small animals' airways — corn cob doesn't. The trade-off is that shavings are generally cheaper by volume.

Is it safe if my pet nibbles it?
Corn cob is a plant material and small incidental amounts aren't a concern. As with any bedding, an animal actively eating large quantities should be checked by a vet.

Which animals is it suitable for?
Guinea pigs, hamsters, gerbils, rats and birds all do well on it. It works as both bedding and a litter layer beneath a cage.

How often should I change it?
Remove soiled areas daily and change fully every week or two, depending on the size of the enclosure and how many animals share it.

Care

General Care & Storage
To get the most out of your Petszo delivery, please keep the following in mind:

  • Edibles: Keep food and treats tightly sealed and stored in a cool, dry environment.
  • Fabrics & Beds: Gently wipe clean or wash at 30ºC (always check the individual label first). Do not bleach.
  • Safety First: Regularly check toys and accessories for damage and remove them if broken.
  • Note: Always refer to the specific packaging for exact instructions.

Getting the most out of your Petszo order comes down to storing things properly and checking them regularly. Here's what matters.

Food and treats

Keep dry food tightly sealed in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Resealing the bag or transferring it to an airtight container helps stop the fats going stale, which is the usual reason a dog or cat suddenly goes off a food they previously liked.

Opened wet food should be covered and refrigerated, and used within about 24 hours. Serve it at room temperature rather than straight from the fridge — cold food is noticeably less appealing to most pets and can be harder on sensitive stomachs.

Many treat pouches contain a small oxygen absorber sachet to keep the contents fresh. This isn't edible — remove and discard it before giving your pet the treat.

Beds, blankets and fabric items

Most fabric items can be gently wiped clean or machine washed at 30°C, but always check the individual care label first — padding and covers vary between products. Don't use bleach, as residue can irritate skin and paws.

Removable covers are worth washing more often than you'd think, particularly for pets with skin sensitivities.

Toys and chews

Check toys and accessories regularly for damage, and remove anything that's cracked, split or losing pieces. Small fragments are a genuine choking and blockage risk.

Always supervise your pet with chews and rawhide products, and take away any piece small enough to be swallowed whole. Match the chew size to your pet — a chew intended for a small dog won't last long with a large one, and creates more risk.

Harnesses, collars and leads

Check the fit periodically, especially on growing puppies and kittens. As a rule you should be able to slide two fingers comfortably under any strap — tighter risks rubbing, looser risks your pet backing out of it.

Inspect stitching, buckles and clips for wear, and replace anything showing damage before it fails on a walk.

Litter trays and small pet enclosures

Scoop clumping litter daily and top up as needed; a full change every 1–2 weeks is typical, more often with several cats sharing a tray. Clean the tray itself with hot water and mild detergent rather than strong disinfectants, some of which are toxic to cats.

For small pet enclosures, spot-clean soiled bedding daily and do a full change weekly.

Switching foods

Introduce any new food gradually over roughly 7–10 days, mixing increasing amounts into the current food. Sudden changes are one of the most common causes of digestive upset, and it's easily avoided.

Always check the product packaging. The guidance here is general — individual products carry their own storage, washing and feeding instructions, and those take precedence. If you're unsure about something, or your pet has a specific health condition, speak to your vet.

Delivery

How long will my order take to arrive?

We aim to dispatch orders within 1–7 business days of you placing them. Delivery time after dispatch depends on the shipping method chosen at checkout. You'll receive tracking details by email once your order is on its way, so you can follow its progress with the carrier.

Do you offer free delivery?

Yes — delivery is free on all UK orders over £59.99. Orders below that threshold are charged at the rate shown at checkout before you pay.

Where do you deliver?

We currently deliver within the United Kingdom only. We don't ship internationally at present. Please note that a small number of items are shipped from outside the UK and may take a little longer to arrive — this is noted on the individual product page where it applies.

What if my order is late?

Carrier delays occasionally happen, particularly around public holidays or in bad weather. If your order hasn't arrived within the expected timeframe, get in touch with your order number and we'll chase it. If a package is confirmed lost or significantly delayed by the courier, we'll send a replacement or issue a refund.

How do I track my order?

Once your order ships, we email you tracking details. Use these to check live delivery status directly with the carrier.

Returns & refunds

Can I return something if I change my mind?

Yes. Under UK consumer law you have 14 days from receiving your order to tell us you'd like to cancel, and a further 14 days to send the items back. Items need to be unused, in their original packaging and in the condition you received them. Return postage for change-of-mind returns is at your cost. Full details are in our Refund & Return Policy.

What if my order arrives damaged or incorrect?

We'll put it right. Under UK law you have up to 30 days to reject a faulty item for a full refund. For transit damage, contact us ideally within 48 hours of delivery with photos of both the item and the packaging. We cover return postage on faulty or incorrect items and will offer a full refund or a replacement.

Are there items I can't return?

For hygiene and safety reasons, opened or unsealed pet food and treats, used grooming products, personalised items and gift cards can't be returned unless they're faulty.

How long do refunds take?

Once we've received and inspected your return, we'll let you know whether it's approved. Approved refunds are processed within 14 days of us receiving the goods, back to your original payment method.

Can I cancel an order before it ships?

Yes — email support@petszo.co.uk with your order number any time before dispatch. If it's already gone out, you can return it under the 14-day change-of-mind period once it arrives.

Products

Do I need a prescription for veterinary diets?

No prescription is legally required in the UK to buy veterinary diet foods. However, these products are formulated for diagnosed conditions, so we strongly recommend speaking to your vet before starting one — and having your pet checked at least every six months while feeding it. If your pet's health worsens, seek veterinary advice straight away.

How should I switch my pet to a new food?

Gradually, over roughly 7–10 days. Mix a small amount of the new food into the current one and increase the proportion each day. Switching abruptly is a common cause of digestive upset.

How do I store pet food once it's open?

Keep dry food in a cool, dry place, ideally resealed or in an airtight container to stop the fats going stale. Opened wet food should go in the fridge and be used within about 24 hours. Always check the individual packaging, as some products have specific requirements.

Shipping & Returns

This policy explains how we process, dispatch and deliver orders, and what to do if something goes wrong.

1. Delivery charges

Delivery is free on all UK orders over £59.99. For orders below that value, the delivery charge is calculated and shown at checkout before you complete your purchase — you'll never be charged an amount you haven't seen first.

2. Order processing and dispatch

We aim to dispatch orders within 1–7 business days of the order being placed. Business days are Monday to Friday, excluding UK public holidays.

Once your order has been processed you'll receive a confirmation email, followed by tracking details where available.

3. Delivery times

Time in transit after dispatch depends on the delivery method selected at checkout and your location. Total time to receive your order is therefore the dispatch window above plus the carrier's transit time.

A small number of products are shipped from outside the UK and take longer to arrive. Where this applies, it is stated clearly on the individual product page.

4. Delivery area

We currently deliver within the United Kingdom only. We do not offer international shipping at present.

Please note that a small number of bulky items cannot be delivered to Northern Ireland. Where this restriction applies, it is noted on the product page.

5. Tracking your order

Once your order ships, we'll email you tracking information where available. You can use this to check the live delivery status directly with the carrier.

6. Delays

Some delays are outside our control — carrier backlogs, severe weather, and public holidays being the most common. If your order hasn't arrived within the expected timeframe, please contact us with your order number and we'll investigate.

If a package is confirmed lost or significantly delayed by the courier, we will send a replacement or issue a refund.

7. Incorrect delivery addresses

Please check your delivery address carefully at checkout. If you spot a mistake, contact us immediately — we can usually correct it before dispatch. Once an order has shipped to an address you provided, we may not be able to recover it.

Does not trap any odours

Works well for my rats as toilet litter. I change the toilet about every three days; they only put their droppings in there. Liquids are theoretically absorbed well too, turning slightly darker and easy to remove. Unfortunately, the litter doesn’t bind odours.

Perfect for the sandpit

I originally wanted to use it for the rats' litter box, but since they seemed to enjoy digging in it more, it's now being used as a digging box. Bury a few treats, and off they go digging away.

Hamsters' Digging Bath

That hamsters need a sand bath is well known. However, I’m happy to offer a second digging box with maize granules. Hamsters love the smell: it seems to smell edible and is always tasted first. But no worries, it just doesn’t taste good. They absolutely love digging in it, and it’s great fun for them to search for seeds in it (just sprinkle a few in). Not suitable as sole bedding, as it’s very loose, but fantastic for keeping them entertained!

Terrible

A bedding for rabbits has to absorb urine for me, so that no odours arise and the rabbits stay dry. \n,This bedding doesn’t absorb any moisture at all. The rabbit litter tray is wet and stinks. \n,I absolutely cannot recommend it. A waste of money.

Low-dust, gentle on the paws, and odour-binding

Perfect for my rat ladies. \n,I've tried so many types of toilet bedding, and the stench was simply unbearable. Before I got the Chipsi Maize Granulate, I was using Chipsi Ultra. At first, I thought the granulate was great too, until I noticed that their little paws were getting a bit sore. Ever since I switched to Chipsi Maize Granulate, everything's been spot on. No sore paws, no sneezing, pure digging fun, and it doesn't stink like it used to. Highly recommended.

Allergy

The description doesn’t mention whether the pellets are dust-free. Unfortunately, one of my rats has developed an allergy to them and keeps sneezing constantly. I won’t be ordering these pellets again.

M
Martina
Doesn't clump, unfortunately.

... at least not in combination with another maize bedding.

Additional bedding for the hamster

I bought the granules as additional bedding in a tub for the hamster to dig in and I'm very satisfied.

N

serves the purpose

I bought it for my rats' litter boxes. At first, the little ones tried to eat it, but now they've figured out that it's meant for the toilet. \n,I would buy it again – great quantity and price, top-notch.

Best bedding

For my guinea pigs, this is the best. It doesn’t smell when wet, keeps their little paws clean, and doesn’t stick to their food like hemp bedding does when they take it from the bowl. \n,Hemp bedding is softer, but it’s dusty and gets used up quickly.

Super

I discovered this granulate by chance and am absolutely thrilled. I use it in the cages of my Senegal parrots. It absorbs really well, and, similar to cat litter, you can simply remove the clumps without having to change everything constantly. One of my two absolutely loves lying on his back, playing and digging in the granulate. I’ll definitely buy it again.

Perfect for wearing down claws!

A great product! Ever since I got the maize granulate, I no longer need to trim my dwarf hamster's claws! She loves digging in it, and I can easily hide food in there too! I use it as a digging box, though I would still stick to my hemp bedding in the terrarium – the maize granulate is just a nice extra!

Well...

The positive aspect of this bedding is that it doesn’t create dust. \n,My doe doesn’t like it in her toilet at all; she hasn’t gone in there since. She’s been sharing the toilet with the buck ever since. \n\n,Conclusion: We won’t be ordering this bedding again. We also find it very expensive for what it is.

The product is okay.

I’ve been using the product for over a year for my rabbit’s litter box. The texture of the granules has changed, and the product is no longer as absorbent. These days, it barely absorbs the urine, and odours develop very quickly as a result. I used to be very satisfied, but unfortunately, the quality seems to be declining over time :(

Perfect for my dwarf rabbit

I bought the Chipsi Maize Granulate for my two dwarf rabbits and I’m super happy with the result. It keeps its structure and doesn’t crumble, doesn’t create dust, and is super absorbent and odour-binding. Whether for the whole cage, the toilet, or near the water bottle, it’s just brilliant. I’ll only be buying this from now on.

Not suitable for dwarf rabbits

I've never had such terrible bedding! It doesn't absorb a thing! Absolutely not recommended!

B
Barbara
Perfect for a parrot cage

For years, this bedding has proven itself for Timneh grey parrots and green Congo parrots. It doesn’t fly around, is absorbent = simply ideal :)

L
Lisa P.
Well...

First, the positive aspects: the maize granulate is very absorbent, doesn’t produce any dust at all, and also smells pleasant – but unfortunately, that’s about it. Sadly, it’s very hard and angular, making it completely unsuitable for the little feet of my gerbils. On top of that, it’s very noisy when they run over it. Probably great for rabbit litter trays and the like, but not really suitable as overall bedding.

H
Hannah
Not suitable for guinea pigs

If these straw pellets are already unhealthy for pigs' feet, then this bedding is even worse. Far too hard for the small, sensitive feet. \n,It didn’t absorb anything either. The cage was soaking wet. \n,Maybe it’s suitable for birds, but definitely not for guinea pigs.

F
Freddie
Addition of fragrances

Currently, unfortunately, only a poor rating, as the product has clearly had fragrances added to it. \n,I was very satisfied with the corn granules for years and used them as litter in the rat cage. \n,Unfortunately, I had to dispose of the last bag due to these scents, as I found no information on the packaging about the type of additives, and I don’t want something like that to end up with my animals.
